A Spider Coupling is a standard jaw-type flexible coupling that consists of two multi-jawed metal hubs and a star-shaped rubber/elastomeric insert called a spider. As torque is applied, the jaws of one hub compress the lobes of the spider against the jaws of the other hub. This compression-based drive allows the coupling to absorb severe torsional shock, dampen vibration, and compensate for parallel, angular, and axial misalignment. Its simple construct makes it an industry standard.
